Family sharing

A family puts a household’s accounts, transactions and budgets in one place. The person who creates it needs Premium; everyone they invite gets Premium through the family and doesn’t need their own plan.

Open Profile and find the Family Account card. Tap Create Family, give it a name, and you become its Owner. You can be in one family at a time.

As the Owner, tap Invite Member on the Family Account card, enter their email, choose a role, and tap Send Invitation.

  • They get an email with an Accept Invitation button. If they already use Buoy, they also get an in-app notification.
  • They sign in (or create an account) with the same email you invited, then accept.
  • Invitations expire after 7 days. Pending ones are listed on the card with their role and time left; tap the X to cancel one.
Role Can do
Owner Everything, including inviting, changing roles, removing members, renaming or deleting the family, and billing. There is one Owner.
Budget Admin Create and edit family budgets and goals, give members their own family-funded budgets, link and disconnect banks, choose whose budget each account feeds.
Member See everything, edit their own personal budgets and goals, categorize family transactions, add to family goals. Can’t change family budgets or link banks.
Read Only See everything, change nothing.

The Owner changes roles from the member list. Nobody else can be made Owner.

When someone accepts an invitation, the accounts, bank connections and savings goals they already had in Buoy join the family and become visible to everyone in it. What happens to their budgets depends on the family: if it already has a family budget, their budgets stay personal and are linked under it; if it doesn’t, their budgets become family budgets.

If you want part of your spending to stay separate, keep it in a bank you don’t link to Buoy, or use a separate Buoy account outside the family.
